Miscreants damage sports facility in Bhubaneswar

Unit-VI Boys’ High School Ground, better known as the football hub of the capital city Bhubaneswar and the home of Unit-VI Athletic Association, is fast becoming a happy hunting ground for tipplers other antisocial elements. Measures to keep the ground safe and clean have failed to yield any positive result.

Things, on the contrary, took an alarming proportion yesterday as drunken miscreants damaged the window panes of the two players’ rest rooms, constructed by the State Sports Department last year. The act of vandalism was today strongly condemned by city sports fraternity, which demanded police patrolling around the ground after evening.

Unit-VI Athletic Association, which has been looking after the ground for nearly three decades and making fruitful use of the infrastructure facility by organising two/three tournament every year, has also further steps to keep the ground out of the reach of antisocial elements.

``These elements have been misusing the ground after evening by indulging in drinking, filthy taking and hooliganism. In order to prevent these unlawful activities, we signed a memorandum of understanding with the local residents in a meeting, which was attended by the Unit-VI school headmaster and the local corporator. But the measures have proved in vain,’’ Unit-VI Athletic Association secretary Dilip Das told mediapersons today.

He, however, said that more steps would be taken to prevent antisocial elements from entering the ground. ``We have decided to lock the gates after 7.00 pm and engage a security at the ground,’’ informed Das.
